Pediatrics in the public health system: challenges and goals

General Description:

The Unified Health System (SUS) is an achievement of Brazilian society, one of the largest public health services in the world, which seeks to guarantee access to health and to promote the better quality of life.

Our goal is to show how pediatrician are inserted in the SUS, from primary care programs to the more complex care, carried out in in one of the largest and most important health centers in Brazil and Latin America, The Unicamp Clinics Hospital.

Our course will present the main challenges found in the pediatricians’ routine, such as arboviruses, promotion of healthy nutrition, maternal and child care, management of children whose health problems are related to the environment, etc.

Course Objectives:

  • To understand the organization of the public health service and the pediatrician’s role.
  • To recognize main diseases and major challenges of the public health system in the pediatrician’s view.
  • To educate about the many interactions – biological, social and cultural – that occur between children and the environment.
  • To provide students with an understanding of biologic, psychological and social factors inter-relate and determine patterns of childhood morbidity.

Teaching Methods:

  • Discussion of clinical cases with practical activities.
  • Lectures.
  • Visit to hospitals and basic health unit.
